Brooklyn Heights is a residential area within Brooklyn Heights situated within Brooklyn, which is in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Brooklyn Heights was the first neighborhood to be protected under the famed 1965 Landmarks Preservation Law of New York City. It is comprised of gorgeous rowhouses as mansions. It offers a broad range of styles, including Greek Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Victorian Gothic, Romanesque, Neo-Grec, Classical Revival, and two-story Federal houses dating to the early 19th century. They were situated in the northern part of the area. There were brick buildings; brownstone was the most popular building material. It was also referred to as “Jersey freestone,” a reddish-brown stone found in Passaic County, New Jersey. Brownstone was a popular kind of rowhouse. There were usually 3 or 4 stories, with the main floor being above the floor. The entrance was via an escalator, sometimes called “stoop”; the word is derived from Dutch. The basement was generally one-half of a flight higher than the street and was used as a place for workers to work from as well as a kitchen.
