The idea of a bridge that connects Manhattan and Brooklyn was first thought of around the mid-century. The bridge was eventually the actual bridge, which was constructed with the help of John A. Roebling. The main engineer on the project was Son Washington Roebling, who contributed to the design and construction and was aided by his spouse, Emily Warren Roebling. The construction began in 1870, and Tammany Hall’s control of the New York Bridge Company oversaw the construction. However, disagreements and design uncertainty delayed the construction process by more than 13 years. Towers
Two towers of the bridge are at a height of 278 feet (85 meters) high and encompass an area of 140 inches (43 by 18 meters) in the middle of the river. The bridges are made of limestone, granite, and Rosendale cement. It is believed that the Clark Quarry mined the limestone in Essex County, New York. The granite slabs were produced by Vinalhaven Island, Maine, along with Bodwell Granite Company and delivered from Maine to New York by schooner. Each tower is adorned with two Gothic Revival pointed arches, the conduits along which the roads run. These archways are more than 117 feet (36 meters) high and 33.75 meters (10.29 meters) long and wide.
